Wrecks and ReefsThe famous Eddystone Rocks marked by the towering lighthouse and the stump of its forerunner that stands on Plymouth Hoe needs little introduction. Although large shoals of big bass are now less common, a fish in double figures is always likely to attack a live launce being drifted along through the main gully. The Eddystones's greatest ever fish is a 500 lb MAKO SHARK that took 2½ hours to subdue. CONGER and LING are plentiful on the reef's North side and fine double-figure POLLACK are a feature on the pinnacles on its southern flanks.
Four miles away is the Hands Deeps Reef where the water is much deeper and great pinnacles of rock claw towards the surface. This is big pollack territory supreme and the initial dive of even a ten pounder is one of angling's greatest thrills. Fish with too tight a clutch and it's a swift goodbye.

East of the StoneTo the East of the Stone as it is familiarly known are the extensive East and West Rutts Reefs. These offer superb POLLACK, CONGER, COD, WHITING and there are often surprises. All these rough grounds are within a mere fourteen miles of the Barbican and the wrecks further out rarely require a journey of more than 2½ hours.
