A Resolution for a Healthy Workforce: Invest in your people for a healthy, thriving business.

When we embark on a new year, many of us make personal resolutions for self-improvement, or goals to achieve.

More of this.

Less of that.

Building good habits.

Pledge to prioritise a healthy workforce.

This year, how about we all commit to prioritising the most vital thing in our businesses: the health of our workforce.

A strong, thriving workforce enriches and provides new opportunities to our communities. It’s a powerful concept! Motivated and productive individuals - from your workforce - take their positive work experiences home to their friends and family, to some of the most deprived areas in our city. How can we make this ripple effect stronger to grow the city’s economy.

The Plymouth Charter encourages a fairer, greener future for Plymouth businesses, and a healthy, supported workforce is the bedrock of that future. We work with Plymouth businesses (our signatories) to develop stronger working practices, learning together as a collective.

Forget the outdated idea of employees as a resource. Your team is your most valuable asset, and investing in them is the smartest business decision you can make. This isn't just about ticking equality, diversity and inclusive boxes; it's about building a thriving, sustainable enterprise where everyone flourishes.

Our Business Health Resolutions for 2025:

  1. Fair Wages, Fair Future: Commit to reviewing and adjusting salaries to ensure they reflect the true value of our employees' contributions. Fair pay isn't just ethical; it's a powerful motivator, leading to increased productivity, loyalty, and reduced turnover. Commit to paying the Real Living Wage

  2. Flexibility: The Key to Engagement: Implement flexible working arrangements – remote work, flexible hours, compressed workweeks – to support work-life balance and attract top talent. Happy, balanced employees are more engaged and productive. In Plymouth we have a huge percentage of people who have caring responsibilities or health challenges, by developing a flexible working policy you open your door to new talent. Read more.

  3. Invest in Growth, Reap the Rewards: Dedicate resources to training and development programs, empowering existing employees to grow their skills and advance within the company and provide opportunities to those in Plymouth’s most deprived areas. Invest in the future talent of Plymouth.

  4. Cultivate a Culture of Well-being: Build and grow a positive, inclusive, and supportive work environment. This includes promoting open communication, providing mental health resources, and celebrating employee successes. A healthy work culture is a productive culture. Read more.

Why a Healthy Workforce Matters:

These resolutions, or pledges, aren't just about improving employee morale; they directly impact your bottom line. A healthy workforce translates to:

  • Increased productivity and efficiency: Happy, engaged employees work harder and are more likely to stay with you for the long run.

  • Reduced absenteeism and turnover: Investing in your team reduces costly recruitment and training cycles.

  • Improved company reputation and brand image: A commitment to employee well-being attracts both customers and talent.

  • Greater innovation and creativity: Empowered employees are more likely to contribute innovative ideas.

This new year let's make a collective resolution to build a healthier, more sustainable business future for Plymouth.

The Plymouth Charter is here to support you on this journey, offering guidance and resources to help you achieve your business health goals. Let's work together to create a thriving community where businesses and employees alike flourish.
